What is lunate malacia? Lunate malacia is a so far quite rare and "incurable disease" of a carpal bone (incurable, since a destroyed lunar bone remains destroyed), the so-called lunar bone. This carpal bone slowly collapses due to a circulatory disorder, resulting in stress and resting pain. If the lunate malacia is not recognized in time, it initially leads to a so-called carpal collapse, in which another carpal bone "tips". The bones shift, which in the long term leads to osteoarthritis in the affected hand.

Lunatummalazie?

Depending on how quickly the lunate malacia is recognized, the person affected is restricted in everyday life and movements due to the persistent pain. If it is the main hand (right-handed right / left-handed left), the disease naturally has more extreme effects in everyday life. One is - depending on the stage - z. E.g. not able to hold a pen properly to write, wash / style hair ... ... and if that works only with pain. Note: every little finger movement automatically causes a movement in the wrist whether you like it or not. Tendons, nerve cords, veins and arteries are not far in the exact area where the lunate is located. And not to be forgotten: the well-known tendon sheaths, as inflammation, the most common misdiagnosis in lunate malacia.

Symptoms

The most common symptom is pain. But also loss of strength, being unable to hold anything and dropping it is part of it. Patients often complain of pain in the wrist area. Similar to tendinitis, these radiate into the arm. Therefore, lunate malacia is often misdiagnosed and dismissed as tendinitis. Lunate malacia cannot be seen on X-rays, only clearly demonstrated on an MRI, at best with a contrast agent. The pain often cannot be completely contained with rest beds, splints, pain ointments and pain relievers and actually has to be eliminated / treated by an operation.

Who are we?

I am Monika Löcken and have been on hand since 2000 as a victim with advice and action for other affected persons. In addition, there are other affected people who now support us in Facebook groups around the world, with whom we exchange ideas, update them and constantly pass on helpful advice, tips and tricks to other affected people. In 2000 I started to set up a website for self-help. In exchange with others, this "hobby" grew more and more. Administrator of the German Facebook group, moderator in the forum at Uwe Herrmann (http://www.lunatumnekrose.de) and also represented in English-speaking groups on Facebook. Let us shake hands and defy this disease together.
